Exciting Shabbat Programs

We hold Shabbat celebrations once or twice a month,
either on Friday evening or Saturday morning, from September to June.

We meet at The Village Community School (VCS), 272 West 10th Street, in Manhattan.

Guests are always welcome at our programs.

See the full schedule of Shabbat programs for 2007-08.

Our next Shabbat program is Friday, May 16.
Please scroll down for more information.

Shabbat Services and Cultural Programs

Our cultural Shabbat services combine contemporary readings  with
elements of tradition that result in inspirational and thought-provoking experiences. We introduce original songs and also preserve familiar melodies with new lyrics that are consistent with our Humanistic philosophy. For secular Jews, Shabbat offers a link to our Jewish culture and heritage as we set aside time for renewing our attachments to our Jewish values and teachings, our collected memories and hopes for the future, and our bonds with Jews all over the world.

Kid-Friendly Shabbat Experience

Kids are invited to attend a few age-appropriate Shabbat celebrations throughout the year. Designed for children ages 3-8 (and older siblings and parents), we'll have music, crafts, food and fun.

Shabbat Singalong

Adults are invited to get together on Friday night, after dinner in a member's home, for dessert, singing, and a social evening with friends.

Shabbat Outings

In addition to our regular Shabbat services and cultural programs, from time-to-time we will organize other activities to share together at the end of the week on Friday night or Saturday. These outings may or may not have a Jewish connection. They can run the gamut from attending a Yiddish play to a baseball game, to going gallery hopping, to bowling and apple picking.

LIFE ON THE EDGE
A Secular Jewish Artist Approaches Judaism

MINDY LEWIS, artist and author of Life Inside, will read from her work and talk about the ways in which Jewish ritual has inspired her as an artist and helped her cast away her sense of being an outsider.

Mindy Lewis is a writer, painter, and graphic designer based in New York City. Her essays have been published in two anthologies and in Newsweek, Body & Soul, Poets & Writers and Lilith magazines.

There is no cost for the service or this program.
Guests are welcome.

*POT-LUCK DESSERT
Members and guests are encouraged to bring enough dessert for themselves and at least one other person. We won't complain if you bring more!

Childcare is available for children 4 and older
with reservations by May 28.

Please RSVP to the office by phone (212-213-1002)
or email by Wednesday, May 28.
